With summer heat settling in across the state, the Virginia Department of Health is calling on families to commit to a safe swimming pledge after a devastating start to the season. Officials reported that 12 drownings have already occurred since the beginning of summer 2025, prompting a renewed focus on water safety at pools, lakes, and beaches.
The health department is asking parents and caregivers to take a simple but serious promise: never leave children unattended near water, always designate a responsible adult to watch swimmers, and ensure everyone wears a life jacket when appropriate. The push comes as many families head to public pools and natural swimming spots for the July Fourth holiday weekend.
Drowning remains a leading cause of accidental death for young children, and officials stress that even a few seconds of distraction can be deadly. They recommend that adults avoid alcohol while supervising swimmers and that children learn basic swimming skills as early as possible.
The department also reminds the public that safety measures extend beyond the water. Sun protection, hydration, and knowing the signs of heat exhaustion are all part of a safe day out. With more hot weather expected, health leaders hope the pledge will help prevent further tragedies and keep summer fun from turning into loss.
