Health officials have issued mosquito-borne illness alerts for multiple Florida counties following recent heavy rainfall that created ideal breeding conditions for the insects. The alerts, which cover both the southern and central parts of the state, come after routine surveillance detected elevated virus activity in local mosquito populations.
The main concern is West Nile virus, though dengue and Eastern equine encephalitis have also been detected in some areas. In response, county health departments have stepped up spraying operations and are urging residents to take precautions, especially during dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active.
The recent storms left standing water in containers, ditches, and low-lying areas, which is exactly where mosquitoes lay eggs. Health experts say it takes only a week or two for larvae to develop into biting adults, so the current spike was expected.
Officials are asking people to dump any standing water around their homes, including in flower pots, bird baths, and old tires. They also recommend wearing long sleeves and using EPA-approved repellents. For those who spend time outdoors, checking local alert maps before heading out is advised.
So far, no human cases have been reported in the affected counties, but the risk is considered moderate to high. The alerts will remain in place until mosquito counts drop and virus activity subsides, which could take several weeks depending on weather conditions. Residents are encouraged to stay informed through their local health department updates.
