Tulsi Gabbard has resigned from her role as director of national intelligence, saying her husband's ongoing health issues require her full attention at home. The former Democratic congresswoman and Trump appointee submitted her resignation letter late Tuesday, ending a tenure that lasted just over a year.
In her statement, Gabbard said the decision was difficult but necessary. "My husband's health has taken a turn that demands my presence and care. No job is more important than family, and I cannot in good conscience continue in this role while he needs me," she wrote.
Her departure comes amid growing tension within the administration over foreign policy. There had been quiet speculation for weeks that Gabbard might leave after the president ordered airstrikes on Iranian military targets. The move fractured the national security team, with some advisers pushing for a more aggressive posture while others urged restraint. Gabbard, who has long opposed U.S. intervention in the Middle East, was reportedly among those who argued against the strikes.
White House officials declined to comment on whether the disagreement played a role in her decision. One senior aide, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Gabbard had been "increasingly isolated" in recent strategy meetings.
Gabbard's resignation is effective immediately. No interim replacement has been named. She is expected to return to her home state of Hawaii to focus on her husband's recovery.
