As schedules change, health care advocates encourage back seat second looks to prevent hot car deaths

As schedules change, health care advocates encourage back seat second looks to prevent hot car deaths

Health and safety advocates are reminding caregivers that a quick glance at the back seat can be the difference between life and death, especially as daily routines change with the start of a new school year or work season. The warning comes with a stark statistic: it takes just 10 minutes for the temperature inside a parked vehicle to climb 19 degrees, and it keeps rising from there. Even when the outside air feels mild, around 70 degrees, the inside of a car can become a deadly oven for a child.

Vehicular heatstroke does not require a scorching summer day. A child's body heats up three to five times faster than an adult's, and when left in a closed car, core temperature can quickly reach dangerous levels. Safety groups urge parents and guardians to build a habit of always opening the back door before locking the car, regardless of whether a child is expected to be inside. They also suggest placing a purse, briefcase, or phone in the back seat as a physical reminder.

Another key piece of advice is to ask your childcare provider to call if your child does not show up as scheduled. This simple check can catch an oversight early. With more families juggling remote work, split shifts, and carpool duties, the risk of distraction grows. A change in routine is the most common thread in these tragedies, so advocates stress that a second look takes only seconds and costs nothing, but it can save a life.
