A Los Angeles judge has granted rapper and singer Lil Nas X a mental health diversion in his misdemeanor battery case stemming from an alleged altercation with a police officer. This ruling offers the Grammy-winning artist a clear route to having the charges entirely dismissed.
The case originated from an incident last January. According to authorities, the "Old Town Road" star was involved in a scuffle with an on-duty police officer while attempting to gain entry to a bar. He was subsequently charged with one count of battery on a police officer and two counts of interfering with an officer.
Under the terms of the diversion, the criminal proceedings against him are suspended. If Lil Nas X successfully completes a prescribed mental health treatment program and avoids any further violations of the law for a period of two years, the original charges will be dropped. The court's decision reflects a growing legal recognition of addressing underlying behavioral health issues within the justice system. His attorney stated the artist is committed to fulfilling the requirements of the program.
