The U.S. Department of Justice has filed a significant civil antitrust lawsuit against OhioHealth, alleging the hospital system illegally consolidated power to block patient access to more affordable healthcare options. The complaint, filed in federal court, asserts that OhioHealth used its dominant market position in the Columbus region to stifle competition, ultimately leading to higher prices for patients and employers.
According to the lawsuit, OhioHealth employed exclusionary contracts with commercial health insurers that prevented them from creating or promoting more affordable health plans that included competing hospitals. These tactics, the DOJ contends, effectively "locked in" patients to the OhioHealth system regardless of cost, undermining efforts to offer lower-premium insurance products. This conduct allegedly insulated OhioHealth from competitive pressure, allowing it to maintain and raise its prices.
The legal action emphasizes the department's focus on healthcare competition, a sector consuming a growing portion of household and national expenditures. Authorities argue that such anti-competitive practices directly harm consumers by limiting their choices and increasing the financial burden of essential medical care. The lawsuit seeks a court order to prevent OhioHealth from continuing these contractual practices and to restore a competitive landscape in the region's healthcare market.
