The World Health Organization has issued a public health warning following reports of "black rain" in parts of Iran. The phenomenon is believed to be the direct result of strikes on oil depot facilities, which have released massive plumes of thick, dark smoke into the atmosphere.
According to the WHO, this precipitation carries a high concentration of toxic pollutants and particulate matter. As the soot and chemicals disperse and fall back to earth with rainfall, they pose a significant risk to respiratory health. Populations in affected areas are at increased risk of developing breathing difficulties, asthma attacks, and other serious lung conditions, particularly among children, the elderly, and those with pre-existing health problems.
Health authorities are advising residents to take precautionary measures. Recommendations include staying indoors as much as possible, keeping windows closed, and avoiding the use of rainwater for any purpose. Individuals experiencing severe coughing, shortness of breath, or chest tightness are urged to seek immediate medical attention. The environmental impact of the deposition of these hazardous materials on soil and water sources also remains a serious, longer-term concern for the region.
