Health officials in Georgia have confirmed three additional measles cases linked to an ongoing outbreak at a metro Atlanta day care facility. The new infections bring the total number of confirmed cases in this cluster to at least six, according to state public health authorities.
The Georgia Department of Public Health said the latest patients are connected to the same child care center where the initial cases were identified earlier this month. Officials have not released the exact location of the facility, but they have confirmed that all of the infected individuals are associated with the day care, either as children, staff, or household members.
Measles is a highly contagious virus that can linger in the air for up to two hours after an infected person leaves a room. Symptoms typically include high fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes, and a distinctive rash that spreads across the body. Health experts stress that vaccination remains the most effective way to prevent infection, with the MMR vaccine offering about 97 percent protection after two doses.
State epidemiologists are now working to identify anyone who may have been exposed, including unvaccinated children and adults who visited the day care during specific dates. They are also coordinating with local clinics to offer post-exposure prophylaxis for those at risk.
This outbreak comes as measles cases are rising nationally, largely driven by gaps in vaccination coverage. Public health officials are urging parents to check their children's immunization records and to keep sick children at home to prevent further spread. Anyone who suspects they have been exposed or is showing symptoms should contact their doctor before visiting a clinic to avoid infecting others.
