McCrabb: Middletown health commissioner embraced career as ‘a calling’

Some people know their future career plans before they're old enough to drive. For Dr. Jennifer McCrabb, that clarity came early, and it never wavered. After more than two decades in public service, the longtime Middletown health commissioner is stepping down, but she insists the work was never just a job.

McCrabb first walked into the city's health department as a young intern, fresh out of graduate school. She expected to stay a year or two. Instead, she found a community that felt like family and a mission that felt personal. Over the years, she led the department through outbreaks, budget cuts, and the unprecedented challenges of a global pandemic. Through it all, she kept a simple philosophy: listen first, act second, and never forget that every statistic is a person.

Colleagues describe her as steady, approachable, and relentless when it came to protecting vulnerable residents. She pushed for better lead screening in older housing, expanded free clinic hours, and built trust with immigrant communities who often avoided government services. Her office became a place where people could ask awkward questions without shame.

In her farewell remarks, McCrabb said she never chased titles or accolades. She wanted to make sure that a child with asthma could breathe, that a new mother could find prenatal care, and that an elderly resident could get a flu shot without navigating a maze of red tape. She called the role a calling, not a career, and said she leaves knowing the department is in good hands.

Her successor will inherit a team that McCrabb helped shape, one that values compassion as much as data. As for McCrabb, she plans to rest, travel, and maybe finally finish that novel she started years ago. But she admits she will likely volunteer at the local clinic within a month, because old habits, especially those born of purpose, are hard to break.
