WHO Taps Dr Vanessa Kerry to Lead Health Resilience Efforts

The World Health Organization has appointed Dr Vanessa Kerry as its new envoy for health resilience, tasking her with strengthening health systems as countries face growing pressure on funding and rising climate threats.

Dr Kerry, a physician and longtime advocate for global health equity, will focus on building sustainable financing models and helping nations prepare for crises that disrupt care. Her role comes at a moment when many health programs are stretched thin, with donor budgets tightening and demand for services climbing.

In her new position, she is expected to work with governments, financial institutions and health partners to push for investments that keep essential services running during emergencies. A major part of the job involves climate resilience, since floods, heatwaves and disease outbreaks increasingly test the ability of health systems to respond.

Supporters say her background in both medicine and policy gives her the tools to bridge gaps between funders and the communities that need resources most. The appointment signals a broader push to treat health security as a long term investment rather than a short term expense.

Dr Kerry has previously spoken about the need to protect gains made in recent decades, warning that progress can unravel quickly without steady funding and planning. Her mandate will include rallying political support for stronger primary care and faster response networks.

The role carries no direct authority over national budgets, but it gives her a platform to press for change at a time when many health leaders say the status quo is no longer enough.
