Wellstar Health System lays off 761 corporate, administrative staff

Wellstar Health System laid off 761 employees on Tuesday, a move the Georgia-based nonprofit described as the result of a thorough review of its operations. The job cuts represent roughly 2 percent of the system's total workforce, according to a statement the organization provided to industry media.

The layoffs are concentrated in corporate and administrative positions. Wellstar emphasized that no frontline care roles, such as nurses or direct patient support staff, were affected. The health system said the restructuring is intended to streamline decision-making and redirect resources toward patient care.

Wellstar operates 11 hospitals and more than 300 other health sites across Georgia. The system has faced financial pressures in recent years, including the closure of Atlanta Medical Center in 2022. That closure drew criticism from local leaders over the loss of a major safety-net hospital in a densely populated area.

The latest cuts come as health systems nationwide continue to trim administrative overhead in response to rising labor costs and tighter reimbursement from insurers and government programs. Wellstar said affected employees will receive severance and access to career transition services. The organization did not specify which departments or locations were most impacted by the reductions.
