Representative Salud Carbajal met with Cottage Health leadership in Santa Barbara this week as the hospital system prepares for the fallout from the Trump administration's "Big Beautiful Bill." According to figures shared during the discussion, the legislation is expected to leave close to 40,000 Central Coast residents without health coverage. Another 37,000 people in the region would face higher premiums under the plan.
Cottage Health, which operates hospitals and clinics across the Central Coast, is bracing for a roughly $40 million initial financial impact. Hospital officials said the combination of unpaid care for newly uninsured patients and reduced reimbursement rates would strain resources at a time when demand for services continues to rise.
Carbajal said the meeting was meant to hear directly from health care providers about how the bill would play out on the ground. He criticized the legislation as a threat to working families and warned that rural and coastal communities would feel the effects first. Cottage leaders described the projected losses as significant but said they are still working through the details of how the funding changes would be implemented.
The congressman said he plans to take the concerns back to Washington and continue pushing for alternatives that protect coverage. Local health advocates have also raised alarms, noting that the Central Coast has a large share of residents who rely on subsidized insurance or public programs.
