State wildlife officials have completed their annual bison roundup on Antelope Island, gathering hundreds of animals for health inspections and an upcoming auction. The herd currently numbers around 750, which conservationists say exceeds the island's sustainable capacity by roughly 200 animals.
The roundup involved riders on horseback and ATVs herding the animals into holding pens over several days. Once corralled, each bison received a health examination, and some were marked for sale. Officials say the reduction is necessary to protect the island's ecosystem, as too many bison can damage native grasses and disrupt the habitat.
The excess animals will be sold at auction, with proceeds going toward herd management and island maintenance. This practice has been in place for years as a way to control population growth without resorting to culling.
Animal welfare advocates have raised concerns about the stress the roundup places on the bison, particularly calves and older animals. Officials maintain that the process is conducted carefully and that the long-term health of the herd depends on keeping numbers in check. The island remains open to visitors, though some areas were temporarily closed during the operation.
