As summer temperatures climb higher each year, local health officials have introduced a new digital dashboard designed to help residents find relief from dangerous heat. The online tool maps out cooling centers, public pools, and air-conditioned spaces across the region, giving people a quick way to locate safe spots when the heat becomes unbearable.
"When temperatures never drop below 70 at night, the body doesn't get the chance to recover, and that's when heat becomes dangerous," said Deputy Health Director, Dr. Justin Frederick. He emphasized that nighttime heat is often underestimated, but it can lead to serious health issues like heat stroke or worsened chronic conditions.
The dashboard updates in real time and includes hours of operation for each location. Users can filter by distance or type of facility. The goal is to make sure everyone, especially older adults and those without air conditioning, knows where to go during extreme heat events.
Health officials are also urging people to check on neighbors and avoid outdoor activities during peak afternoon hours. The dashboard is part of a broader effort to reduce heat-related illnesses as climate change leads to longer and more intense heat waves.
For now, the tool is available online and will remain active through the end of summer.
