A brief guide to choosing the right underwear for workouts

Many women focus on the right sports bra or the perfect pair of leggings, but the underwear worn underneath is often an afterthought. According to women's health experts, that oversight can lead to real discomfort and even infections. During exercise, the combination of sweat, heat, and friction creates a perfect storm for irritation, chafing, and bacterial or yeast overgrowth.

The main issue is moisture. When synthetic workout gear traps sweat against the skin, it disrupts the natural pH balance of the vaginal area. This can lead to conditions like folliculitis, contact dermatitis, or stubborn yeast infections. Friction from seams and elastic edges can also cause raw, painful skin, especially during high-impact activities like running or cycling.

So what should you look for? The experts are clear: cotton is not the enemy, but it is not ideal for intense sessions. Cotton absorbs moisture and holds it against the body, which can cause the very problems you are trying to avoid. Instead, look for moisture-wicking fabrics like nylon, polyester, or spandex blends that pull sweat away from the skin and dry quickly. Many athletic brands now make underwear with a cotton-lined gusset in the crotch area, which offers breathability where it matters most while still providing the quick-dry benefits of synthetics elsewhere.

Fit is just as important as fabric. Choose a style that stays put without digging in. Bikini or hipster cuts work well for most workouts, while thongs can be fine for low-impact sessions but may increase irritation during long runs. Seamless designs or those with flat seams reduce rubbing. Also, avoid wearing the same pair for more than one workout, and change out of sweaty underwear as soon as you finish. If you are prone to recurring issues, consider a breathable, loose-fitting style for rest days to let the skin recover. The right choice is not about fashion; it is about keeping you comfortable and healthy so you can keep moving.
