Kaiser Permanente internship program helps Valley students explore health care careers

A new internship initiative at Kaiser Permanente Fresno is giving local students a real chance to see what working in health care actually looks like. Instead of just reading about medical careers, these interns spend their days shadowing doctors and nurses, watching how a hospital operates, and asking questions about the day-to-day realities of the job.

The program is designed for high school and community college students across the San Joaquin Valley, many of whom have little or no prior exposure to the medical field. Organizers say the goal is not only to spark interest but also to build a pipeline of future health care workers from the region. For students who might not have family members in medicine, the internship offers a rare window into roles ranging from patient care to lab work and administrative support.

Participants rotate through different departments, so they get a broad view rather than a narrow one. They observe how nurses manage multiple patients, how doctors communicate with families, and how behind-the-scenes staff keep everything running smoothly. One intern noted that the experience changed her mind about what she wanted to do, shifting from a vague idea of nursing to a clearer interest in radiology after spending time in the imaging unit.

Kaiser Permanente officials say they plan to expand the program in coming years, especially in underserved communities where access to health care careers is limited. For now, the focus stays on giving students practical skills, professional confidence, and a realistic sense of what it takes to succeed in medicine. The hope is that some of these interns will come back as employees, bringing their local knowledge and passion back to the same clinics and hospitals where they first got their start.
