Health coaching app helpful for inflammatory bowel disease management

Health coaching app helpful for inflammatory bowel disease management

A new study suggests that pairing a mobile health coaching app with standard medical care can significantly improve outcomes for people with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). The research, published online in the journal Crohn's and Colitis 360 on April 26, looked at how digital tools could help patients better manage their condition.

IBD, which includes Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, often requires complex, long-term management. Patients must track symptoms, adhere to medication schedules, and adjust their diets and stress levels. The study found that adding a structured app and online coaching sessions to usual care led to measurable improvements. Participants who used the app reported better disease control and quality of life compared to those who received standard treatment alone.

The coaching component appears to be a key factor. Live, online sessions with a health coach helped patients set realistic goals, understand their symptoms, and stay motivated. The app itself provided tools for tracking daily health metrics, logging meals, and receiving educational content tailored to IBD.

Researchers noted that the combination of technology and human support filled a gap in traditional care. Many IBD patients see their doctors only a few times a year, leaving them to manage daily challenges on their own. The coaching app offers a way to provide continuous, low-cost support between appointments.

While the study is early, it points toward a future where digital health tools become a standard part of managing chronic illnesses like IBD. The findings suggest that even simple, scalable interventions can make a real difference for patients struggling with a difficult disease.
