The Potomac River is once again safe for swimming, paddling, and other water contact activities. Health officials have officially lifted the recreational advisory that had been in place, declaring the water quality within acceptable safety standards.
Recent testing conducted at multiple points along the river showed that levels of E. coli bacteria have returned to safe thresholds. The bacteria, which can indicate the presence of fecal contamination, had previously exceeded limits considered safe for human contact, prompting the health warning. The advisory was issued as a precaution to protect the public from potential illness, which can include gastrointestinal issues, skin rashes, and infections.
Officials monitor the river's water quality regularly, especially after significant rainfall, which can lead to increased bacterial runoff from stormwater and combined sewer overflows. The lifting of the advisory is a welcome sign for local residents and visitors who enjoy the river's recreational opportunities during the summer months.
While the advisory is now rescinded, authorities remind the public that water conditions can change. They recommend avoiding water contact for 48 hours after heavy rains and always being mindful of personal safety while enjoying the natural resource.
