Adults living along the coast in England and Wales may face a hidden health disadvantage during their middle years, according to new research led by University College London. The study, which analyzed health data from thousands of people in their 40s and 50s, found that those residing in coastal areas reported worse overall physical and mental health compared to their inland counterparts.

The researchers suggest that the reasons are not simply about salty air or scenic views. Instead, they point to a mix of socioeconomic factors that often cluster in seaside towns. Many coastal communities have aging populations, limited access to well-paying jobs, and fewer healthcare services within easy reach. Seasonal tourism can also strain local infrastructure, making it harder for residents to maintain consistent routines around exercise, diet, and preventive care.

The study's authors were careful to note that not every coastal resident is affected equally. The pattern was strongest in areas with higher deprivation, where the combination of low income and geographic isolation appears to amplify health risks. In contrast, wealthier coastal enclaves did not show the same decline, suggesting that the problem is less about the coast itself and more about the economic and social conditions that often accompany it.

The findings add to a growing body of evidence that where you live matters for long-term health, even in a relatively small country like England and Wales. The team hopes the results will prompt local authorities to rethink how they allocate resources, especially for middle-aged adults who are often overlooked in favor of younger or older age groups. Without targeted support, the study warns, these health gaps could widen as the population ages.
