When children walk through the doors of CHOP's Behavioral Health and Crisis Center, they enter a place built specifically for their needs. The center, which opened in response to the growing mental health emergency among young people, provides immediate care for kids in distress. Unlike a standard emergency room, this facility is designed to feel less clinical and more welcoming, with calming colors, private rooms, and staff trained to work with children and teens.
The goal is to stabilize a crisis quickly and connect families with ongoing support. Many kids arrive after a panic attack, suicidal thoughts, or a violent outburst. Instead of waiting hours in a busy ER, they get seen by a team of psychiatrists, social workers, and nurses who understand child development. The center also offers follow-up appointments, therapy referrals, and help navigating insurance.
Since opening, the center has seen a steady stream of families who had nowhere else to turn. Parents often describe feeling hopeless before arriving, unsure how to help their child. The staff focuses on de-escalation and safety planning, not just medication. For many, it is the first time they feel heard.
The center does not solve the broader shortage of child psychiatrists or the stigma around mental health. But for the kids who come through its doors, it offers something rare: immediate, compassionate care when they need it most.
