Health officials in New York City have confirmed that the number of Legionnaires' disease cases on Manhattan's Upper East Side has climbed to 10. The update comes as the city intensifies its investigation into the source of the outbreak, focusing on cooling towers in the neighborhood where the bacteria may be spreading.
Council Speaker Julie Menin and other local leaders were notified of the sharp rise in infections. The city's health department has been testing water samples from cooling towers in the affected area to determine if the Legionella bacteria is present. These towers, often located on rooftops, can spread the bacteria through mist if not properly maintained.
Legionnaires' disease is a severe form of pneumonia caused by inhaling water droplets contaminated with Legionella. It is not spread from person to person. Symptoms include cough, fever, chills, and muscle aches, and the disease can be fatal, especially for older adults or those with weakened immune systems.
Officials are urging residents with symptoms to seek medical attention quickly. The health department has not yet identified the exact source of the outbreak but continues to test and inspect cooling towers in the neighborhood. Residents are advised to remain cautious but not alarmed, as the risk to the general public remains low.
