Washington state officials and members of Congress are pushing back against proposed federal health care reductions, warning the changes could strip billions of dollars from hospitals and drive up insurance premiums for millions of residents.
The cuts, advanced by federal lawmakers and the administration, target Medicaid funding and subsidies tied to the Affordable Care Act. State leaders say the combined effect would hit rural hospitals hardest, many of which already operate on thin margins and depend on federal reimbursements to keep emergency rooms open.
"This is not abstract policy," one state health official said. "These are beds closing and families losing coverage."
Hospital associations estimate Washington facilities could lose several billion dollars over the next decade under the proposals. Insurance analysts add that premium increases could follow if subsidies shrink, particularly for older adults and self-employed workers who buy coverage on the individual market.
Supporters of the reductions argue the current system is unsustainable and that trimming spending will force efficiency. They contend states have room to absorb the changes through better program management.
The dispute is shaping up as a central issue ahead of the midterms, with candidates on both sides framing it as a question of fiscal responsibility versus protecting working families. State lawmakers say they are exploring contingency funding but acknowledge the state cannot fully replace lost federal dollars.
