Utah Tech University has been awarded its first National Institutes of Health research grant, a flagship award worth more than $1 million that will expand student learning, workforce development and scientific discovery in the region.
The grant marks a significant milestone for the institution, which has steadily built its research profile in recent years. University officials described the award as a turning point for both the campus and the surrounding community, noting that the funding will support hands-on research opportunities for students and help train the next generation of scientists and health professionals.
The project funded by the grant is expected to involve undergraduate and graduate students working alongside faculty mentors, giving them experience with advanced laboratory techniques and real-world research problems. Support will also go toward equipment, training and outreach efforts aimed at strengthening the local science workforce.
University leaders said the award reflects years of investment in faculty research and infrastructure, and they expect it to open the door to additional federal funding in the future. Community partners, including regional health organizations, are expected to collaborate on parts of the work, extending the grant's impact beyond campus.
The funding comes at a time when demand for skilled workers in health and life sciences continues to grow across the state. Officials said the grant will help Utah Tech students compete for jobs in those fields while contributing to research that could benefit patients and communities statewide.
