The Oregon Health Authority has introduced two new nutrition benefits for Oregon Health Plan members who are managing chronic or complex health conditions. The initiative aims to address food insecurity as a key factor in overall health outcomes. Starting this month, eligible members can receive medically tailored meals and healthy food boxes delivered to their homes. The program targets individuals with conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, kidney failure, and certain immune disorders.
According to state health officials, the new benefits are part of a broader effort to treat the root causes of poor health rather than just symptoms. The meals are designed by dietitians to meet specific medical needs, while the food boxes contain fresh produce, lean proteins, and whole grains. Enrollment is automatic for some members based on their diagnosis codes, but others may need to contact their coordinated care organization to check eligibility.
Advocates for food access have praised the move, noting that many low-income Oregonians with chronic illnesses struggle to afford nutritious food. The Oregon Health Authority estimates that tens of thousands of members could qualify. The program is funded through a combination of federal Medicaid dollars and state allocations. Officials say they will track health outcomes over the next year to measure the impact on hospital readmissions and medication adherence.
