San Francisco health officials are warning about the city's first reported deadly overdose involving a powerful new opioid. The case marks a troubling development in the ongoing overdose crisis and has prompted public health teams to issue an alert about the drug's potency and its growing presence in the local supply.
MGM-15 is a synthetic opioid that authorities describe as significantly stronger than fentanyl. Even tiny amounts can cause respiratory failure, and the drug is difficult to detect because it is often mixed into other substances without the user's knowledge. Officials say the fatal case involved a person who likely did not know they were consuming MGM-15.
Public health teams are urging residents who use drugs to carry naloxone and to never use alone. They also recommend testing substances with available strips, though standard fentanyl test strips may not detect MGM-15. Outreach workers are distributing overdose reversal kits and warning cards in neighborhoods with high overdose rates.
The medical examiner confirmed the death this week after toxicology results came back positive for the compound. Health officials did not release the person's identity or the exact location of the overdose. They said the case is under investigation and that more details may follow.
Officials stressed that the arrival of MGM-15 does not change the basic response to an overdose: call 911, administer naloxone, and stay with the person until help arrives. They also noted that repeated doses of naloxone may be needed because of the drug's strength. Community groups are calling for expanded access to treatment and harm reduction services as the city braces for further cases.
