Nearly 800 residents turned out for a large-scale food distribution at the Southshore Community Resource Center in Ruskin this week, with organizers handing out over 10,000 pounds of groceries at no cost. The event was open to anyone in the area, with no income checks or proof of need required.
Shoppers moved through the center's parking lot and indoor spaces, filling bags and boxes with a wide range of staples. The supply included fresh meat, shelf-stable canned goods, seasonal fruits and vegetables, potatoes, rice, and other everyday kitchen basics. Volunteers helped load heavier items into cars and offered guidance on where to find additional assistance if needed.
Staff at the resource center said the goal was simple: remove barriers and make sure families had enough to eat without the stress of paperwork or eligibility rules. They noted that demand has stayed high in southern Hillsborough County, and events like this one help fill gaps left by other programs.
The distribution was funded through a mix of local donations and partnerships with regional food banks. Organizers did not give a specific date for the next similar event but said they plan to hold more in the coming months, depending on supply and volunteer availability. For now, they encouraged residents to call the center for updates on future food drops.
