Sept. 22 marks Texas Veteran Suicide Prevention Day, a date set aside to confront a troubling reality. An estimated 22 veterans die by suicide every day across the country, and San Antonio, home to one of the largest military communities in the nation, feels that loss deeply.

For veterans in the area, help is available through several channels. The South Texas Veterans Health Care System operates mental health clinics and offers same day access for veterans in crisis. The Veterans Crisis Line can be reached by dialing 988 and pressing 1, and trained responders are available around the clock by phone, text, or online chat.

Local organizations also play a role. The San Antonio VA offers group therapy, individual counseling, and peer support programs tailored to combat veterans. The Military and Veteran Peer Network connects former service members with others who understand military culture. the Bexar County Veterans Service Office helps veterans navigate benefits that can cover mental health treatment.

Family members and friends are encouraged to watch for warning signs, including withdrawal, sudden mood shifts, and talk of hopelessness. Asking a veteran directly about suicidal thoughts does not increase risk and can open the door to getting help.

Reaching out is not a sign of weakness. For many veterans, it is the first step toward recovery.
