Q&A: Why humanitarian aid is crucial to stopping the Ebola outbreak

Health officials are warning that the fight against the latest Ebola outbreak cannot be won without a major push on humanitarian aid. While medical teams focus on isolating patients and tracing contacts, experts say the virus thrives in communities where basic needs go unmet.

Dr. Sarah Mwangi, a field coordinator with the regional health response, explained that hunger and displacement are fueling the spread. "When people are desperate for food or clean water, they cannot follow quarantine rules," she said. "They have to move, they have to gather, and that is exactly how the virus jumps."

The current outbreak has hit areas already struggling with conflict and poverty. Hospitals are overwhelmed, but many residents avoid treatment centers because they fear being cut off from their families or losing their livelihoods. Aid workers say that providing food, safe water, and cash assistance builds trust. It also gives people a reason to stay home and report symptoms early.

Without this support, containment efforts stall. "You can have the best vaccines and the best doctors," Dr. Mwangi added, "but if people are starving, they will not cooperate. The virus exploits that desperation."

Humanitarian groups are now calling for a coordinated response that blends health measures with emergency relief. The message is clear: stopping Ebola means treating the whole crisis, not just the symptoms.
