Proposed Cuts to National Health Survey Raise Concerns for Disability Data

Proposed Cuts to National Health Survey Raise Concerns for Disability Data

Advocates and researchers are warning that planned reductions to a major national health survey could lead to serious undercounting of Americans with disabilities. According to estimates cited by some experts, as many as a quarter of wheelchair users and more than a third of people who are blind or deaf could be classified as not disabled under a shortened version of the questionnaire.

The survey in question has long served as a primary tool for tracking health trends, guiding federal funding, and shaping policies that affect daily life for millions of people. Shortening it would mean removing or condensing questions that currently capture a wide range of disabilities, including mobility, sensory, cognitive, and independent living limitations.

Critics say the changes would distort the data that government agencies, researchers, and service providers rely on. If people who need support are not counted, programs could receive less money, accessibility rules could be weakened, and gaps in care could widen.

Supporters of the cuts argue they are needed to save money and reduce the burden on respondents. But disability rights groups say accuracy matters more than speed, and that a survey which misses a large share of disabled people cannot produce reliable results. They are calling for the proposal to be reconsidered before any changes take effect.
