Residents across north-central Arkansas are facing the prospect of significantly higher healthcare costs following a major contract breakdown between White River Health System and UnitedHealthcare. Effective April 1, the prominent healthcare provider is officially out of network for all UnitedHealthcare commercial and Medicare Advantage insurance plans.
This development means that patients covered under these specific plans will now be responsible for much higher out-of-pocket expenses for services received at White River Medical Center in Batesville, its numerous regional clinics, and any affiliated outpatient facilities. While emergency services will still be covered at in-network levels, all non-emergency care, including routine doctor visits, scheduled surgeries, and diagnostic testing, will be billed at more costly out-of-network rates.
The dispute centers on failed negotiations for a new contract, with both sides citing irreconcilable differences. Hospital officials have stated that UnitedHealthcare's proposed reimbursement rates were insufficient to cover the rising costs of providing care, including medications, supplies, and staff wages. The insurer, meanwhile, has expressed disappointment at the termination and emphasized its focus on affordability for its members.
The impasse leaves thousands of patients in a difficult position, forced to choose between paying substantially more for their trusted local providers or seeking new in-network doctors and facilities, which may involve traveling greater distances. Community members are urged to contact their benefits administrators to understand their specific coverage changes and explore their options before seeking non-emergency care.
