Open Enrollment Begins for Affordable Care Act Marketplace Plans

Open Enrollment Begins for Affordable Care Act Marketplace Plans

The annual sign-up window for health insurance through the Affordable Care Act marketplace, commonly known as Obamacare, opened Sunday in most states and will remain available through Jan. 15. The period gives uninsured Americans and those who buy coverage on their own a chance to select a plan for the coming year, often with the help of federal subsidies that lower monthly premiums.

Shoppers should pay attention to more than the headline premium. Deductibles, copays, provider networks and prescription drug coverage can vary widely between plans, and a lower monthly price does not always mean lower overall costs. Checking whether a preferred doctor or hospital is in a plan's network before enrolling can prevent unpleasant surprises later.

Consumers who already have marketplace coverage should review their current plan rather than letting it renew automatically. Insurers frequently adjust premiums, benefits and networks from year to year, so a plan that worked well in the past may no longer be the best fit. Updating income information is also important, since inaccurate estimates can affect the size of any subsidy and lead to repayment issues at tax time.

Free enrollment assistance is available in many communities through navigators and insurance brokers, and the federal marketplace website offers plan comparisons and cost estimates. Anyone who misses the Jan. 15 deadline generally cannot sign up until the next open enrollment period unless they qualify for a special enrollment window, such as after a job loss, a move or a birth.
