Officials Search for Woman Who Handled Rabid Bat in Minneapolis

Public health officials in Minneapolis are asking for help finding a woman who picked up a bat that later tested positive for rabies. The incident happened near the downtown area, according to the Minnesota Department of Health.

The woman was seen handling the bat with her bare hands before releasing it. Health officials confirmed the animal was rabid after testing. Rabies is a serious viral disease that affects the nervous system and is almost always fatal once symptoms appear, but it can be prevented with prompt treatment.

Anyone who came in contact with the bat is urged to contact their healthcare provider right away. Post-exposure treatment is highly effective when started soon after exposure.

Officials describe the woman as white, in her 30s, with shoulder-length brown hair. She was wearing a dark jacket and light-colored pants at the time.
