A veterinarian with NOVUS says managing viral threats is still the main focus for producers raising nursery pigs. Dr. Alex Hintz spoke with Brownfield at the World Pork Expo in Des Moines on Wednesday. He explained that both producers and veterinarians recognize how destructive a viral outbreak can be during the nursery phase.
Dr. Hintz emphasized that a strong management program is essential. He noted that the industry is actively looking for better tools to mitigate viruses in young pigs. The nursery stage is a critical time when pigs are vulnerable, and an outbreak can set back an entire operation. According to Hintz, the conversation among producers has shifted toward prevention and early intervention rather than just treatment.
He highlighted that biosecurity measures, vaccination protocols, and nutrition all play a role in keeping nursery pigs healthy. The goal is to reduce the viral load in the environment and support the pigs' immune systems. Dr. Hintz added that ongoing research and collaboration between vets and producers are helping to develop more effective strategies. As the industry continues to face challenges with diseases like PRRS and PEDV, maintaining a focus on viral mitigation remains a top priority for the health and productivity of nursery pigs.
