A new initiative encouraging people to walk for 30 minutes each day will launch early next year, with participants eligible for rewards. The scheme, developed in partnership with former Olympic medallist Sir Brendan Foster, has been dubbed the "marathon a month" program.
Under the plan, individuals who consistently meet the daily walking target will receive vouchers and discounts on health-related products and services. The goal is to tackle rising levels of physical inactivity, which health officials link to increased rates of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and mental health issues.
Sir Brendan Foster, a long-distance runner who won bronze in the 10,000 meters at the 1976 Olympics, said the program is designed to make exercise feel achievable rather than intimidating. "Walking is something almost everyone can do. It does not require special equipment or a gym membership. It is simply about putting one foot in front of the other," he said.
The NHS hopes the scheme will appeal to people who currently do little or no exercise. Officials estimate that if just a fraction of the population takes part, it could significantly reduce pressure on the health service. The program is set to roll out in select areas before a wider national launch.
