New Baystate Franklin doctors explore rural health needs on county tour

Six new family medicine residents from Baystate Franklin Medical Center recently completed a tour of Franklin County, designed to give them a firsthand look at the unique health needs of rural communities. The group visited various community support services, including food pantries, senior centers, and addiction recovery programs, to understand the social factors that affect patient health beyond the clinic walls.

The tour aimed to bridge the gap between hospital-based care and the realities of life in a rural area, where access to transportation, healthy food, and mental health services can be limited. Organizers said the experience helps new physicians see how poverty, isolation, and a lack of local specialists directly impact their patients' well-being.

Residents met with staff at local health centers and learned about mobile health units that bring care to remote towns. They also discussed how community organizations work together to address issues like housing instability and chronic disease management. One resident noted that seeing the region's strengths, such as strong volunteer networks, was just as important as identifying its gaps.

The program is part of a broader effort to train doctors who will stay in rural areas long-term. By immersing new physicians in the community early, Baystate Franklin hopes to build a workforce that understands the specific challenges of providing care in western Massachusetts. The tour is expected to become a regular part of the residency curriculum.
