The Movember Foundation has announced plans to establish its Institute of Men's Health at the University of York, a move that co-founder Adam Garone says will create a global hub for research and action. The institute, set to open in the coming years, will focus on tackling the biggest health challenges facing men, including prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health, and suicide prevention.
Garone revealed the decision during a recent visit to the campus, highlighting the university's strong track record in health sciences and its collaborative research culture. "York has the right mix of expertise, ambition, and community spirit to host this institute," he said. The facility will bring together researchers, clinicians, and public health experts to develop new treatments and prevention strategies.
The institute aims to accelerate progress in men's health by funding innovative studies and training the next generation of specialists. It will also work closely with local health services and charities to ensure findings reach those who need them most. The University of York has already committed significant resources to the project, including dedicated lab space and support staff.
This marks a major step for the Movember Foundation, which started as a small moustache-growing fundraiser in Australia two decades ago and has since grown into a global movement. The York institute is expected to become a flagship center for men's health research, drawing talent from around the world. No specific opening date has been set, but planning is underway.
