Michigan health officials are sounding the alarm over a surge in Salmonella infections connected to three separate multistate outbreaks. The common link appears to be contact with backyard poultry, especially baby chicks and ducklings.
The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services reported that at least 15 people in the state have fallen ill so far. Across the country, more than 200 cases have been recorded in dozens of states. While no deaths have been reported in Michigan, several people have required hospitalization.
Officials say the outbreaks are tied to birds purchased from multiple suppliers and farm stores. The bacteria can spread easily when people handle the animals or touch surfaces where they roam. Young children are especially at risk because they are more likely to put their hands in their mouths after petting the birds.
Health experts urge anyone who keeps backyard poultry to wash their hands thoroughly with soap and water after handling the birds or cleaning their coops. They also warn against letting the birds inside the house, especially in kitchens or areas where food is prepared. People should not kiss or snuggle the birds, and shoes worn in the coop should be left outside.
Symptoms of Salmonella include diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps. Most people recover without treatment, but young children, older adults, and those with weakened immune systems can face more severe illness. Anyone with symptoms who has had recent contact with poultry should contact a doctor.
