QUEENS, NY — Sean Manaea is still waiting for his first opportunity to get into a game out of the bullpen this season, but remains adamant that his lagging velocity is not a primary concern. The veteran left-hander, who signed a two-year deal with the Mets this past offseason, is prioritizing a deliberate build-up to ensure he is fully healthy and effective for the long haul.
Manaea acknowledged that his fastball speed is not yet where he wants it to be during live batting practice sessions. However, he emphasized that this is a calculated part of his spring progression. After dealing with injuries earlier in his career, the 32-year-old is committed to a patient approach, trusting that the velocity will naturally return as he builds arm strength through consistent work.
"I'm not worried about it at all," Manaea stated. "The most important thing for me is feeling healthy and being ready to contribute over the full season. The velocity comes as you get more reps and your body gets into a rhythm."
Manager Carlos Mendoza has expressed support for the plan, noting Manaea's experience and the importance of having him fully operational for the grueling summer months. The Mets view Manaea as a versatile weapon capable of providing valuable innings in multiple roles, making his sustained health a key component of their pitching strategy. For now, the focus remains on preparation, with the belief that results will follow.
