Medical Students Gain Hands-On Experience in Simulation Lab

Students at the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine are getting practical training through the school's simulation lab, where they practice clinical skills on realistic mannequins and task trainers before working with actual patients.

The lab provides a controlled environment where future physicians can make mistakes without putting anyone at risk. Students rotate through stations that cover everything from basic physical exams to emergency scenarios. Instructors watch from behind glass or via cameras, then offer feedback on technique, communication, and decision making.

Mannequins in the lab can breathe, blink, and respond to treatments. Some sessions involve standardized patients, actors trained to portray specific conditions and symptoms. This lets students practice taking medical histories, delivering difficult news, and working through diagnostic puzzles in real time.
