Relentless coughing echoes through the Mumbai suburb of Govandi, where families live cramped under tarpaulin and salvaged wood. The narrow lanes are waterlogged and airless, and here in India’s financial capital, a deadly disease is lurking at every door. Tuberculosis (TB) remains a significant public health challenge, particularly in impoverished areas where living conditions are dire.
Despite the government's ambitious vow to eliminate TB by the end of 2025, progress has been slow and fraught with obstacles. Many residents lack access to healthcare services, and the stigma surrounding the disease often prevents individuals from seeking treatment. The crowded living conditions exacerbate the spread of TB, making it difficult to contain.
Health officials are grappling with resource shortages and the need for more effective outreach programs. As the deadline approaches, the urgency to address these systemic issues intensifies. Without swift action and comprehensive strategies, the goal of eradicating TB in India may remain an elusive dream.
