Hospital sued after drug addict nurse allegedly causes death of two patients

A civil lawsuit has been filed against Heritage Valley Sewickley Hospital, alleging that a drug-addicted emergency department nurse caused the deaths of two patients through neglect and theft of narcotics. The legal action, brought forward by two whistleblowers who worked at the facility, claims that hospital administrators ignored repeated warnings and actively covered for the nurse instead of intervening.

According to the complaint, the nurse was known to be dependent on opioids and would frequently divert medications meant for patients. On multiple occasions, the nurse is accused of failing to properly monitor patients or administer life-saving treatments while under the influence. The lawsuit states that these lapses directly led to two preventable deaths in the emergency room.

The whistleblowers, who remain unnamed in court documents, say they reported their concerns to supervisors months before the fatalities occurred. Instead of investigating, the hospital allegedly moved the nurse to different shifts and discouraged staff from speaking up. The suit accuses leadership of prioritizing reputation over patient safety.

The hospital has not issued a public statement on the specific allegations. Legal experts note that cases involving drug diversion in healthcare settings often reveal systemic failures in oversight and reporting. The lawsuit seeks damages for the families of the deceased and demands policy changes to prevent future incidents.
