Health Secretary Urges Vaccination as New COVID-19 Shots Arrive

In the midst of a historic measles outbreak, state and local health officials crammed into the family-owned Hilltop Pharmacy in Allentown on Monday to push a simple message: get vaccinated. The event marked the official rollout of updated COVID-19 vaccines, but the urgency in the room extended well beyond the coronavirus. Officials pointed to a measles surge that has alarmed public health experts across the region, calling it a reminder of how quickly preventable diseases can return when immunization rates slip.

The state health secretary spoke directly to residents who have delayed or skipped shots, saying the new vaccines are safe, effective, and widely available at pharmacies, clinics, and doctor's offices. She acknowledged that pandemic fatigue has made many people tune out, but stressed that the stakes have not changed. Children, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems remain at the highest risk.

Pharmacists at Hilltop said they have already fielded a steady stream of questions from customers confused about which shots they need and when. Staff encouraged people to bring their vaccination records so they can sort out timing between COVID-19, measles, and other routine immunizations in a single visit. Local officials also announced pop-up clinics at community centers and schools over the coming weeks, aiming to reach neighborhoods with lower vaccination rates.

The health secretary closed by asking residents to talk with a trusted doctor or pharmacist rather than relying on rumors online. "Please get vaccinated," she said, adding that protecting one person often means protecting an entire household or classroom.
