Health inspectors check food safety at Milwaukee Night Market

Health inspectors check food safety at Milwaukee Night Market

Milwaukee health inspectors were out in force during the first Night Market of the season, checking food vendors for safety compliance. The city's annual event draws large crowds eager for street food, but behind the scenes, inspectors ensure every bite is safe to eat.

Officials from the Milwaukee Health Department conducted on-site inspections of dozens of food stalls, looking for proper food storage temperatures, clean cooking surfaces, and valid permits. Vendors were required to have handwashing stations and gloves available, and inspectors checked that raw meats were kept separate from ready-to-eat items.

One inspector noted that most vendors passed initial checks, but a few needed quick corrections, such as reheating food to the right temperature or restocking soap at hand sinks. The department emphasized that the goal is education, not punishment, especially for first-time vendors.

The Night Market, held along Wisconsin Avenue, features a mix of local restaurants, food trucks, and pop-up stands. Organizers say the event supports small businesses while giving residents a taste of different cuisines. With summer crowds expected to grow, health officials plan to conduct surprise follow-up visits throughout the season.

For now, vendors who passed inspection are serving everything from tacos to egg rolls, with the city's seal of approval. The next market is scheduled for later this month, with the same rigorous checks in place.
