The World Health Organization (WHO) is assisting Nigeria following confirmation of the first case of Ebola Bundibugyo virus disease in the country. The announcement marks the first time this particular strain has been detected in Nigeria, prompting health authorities to move quickly to contain any potential spread.
Officials said the confirmed case has been isolated and is receiving care, while contact tracing is under way to identify anyone who may have been exposed. The WHO is providing technical support, including laboratory testing, infection prevention guidance, and help with surveillance efforts. Additional supplies and expert teams are being mobilized to strengthen the response on the ground.
Ebola Bundibugyo is one of several known strains of the virus and was first identified in Uganda in 2007. It causes symptoms similar to other forms of Ebola, including fever, fatigue, muscle pain, and in severe cases internal bleeding. Health officials stressed that early detection and rapid isolation are critical to limiting transmission.
Authorities are urging the public to remain calm and to report symptoms promptly to health facilities. Community engagement teams are working to share accurate information and counter misinformation. The WHO said it will continue to coordinate with national and regional partners as the situation develops, and further updates are expected in the coming days.
