A physician from Greenville has been nominated to join the North Carolina State Health Plan Board of Trustees, a key panel overseeing health benefits for hundreds of thousands of public employees and retirees. State Treasurer Brad Briner made the announcement on Thursday, highlighting the nominee's extensive clinical experience and commitment to improving healthcare access in eastern North Carolina.
The nominee, whose practice focuses on primary care and community health, will bring a frontline medical perspective to the board. The State Health Plan covers teachers, state workers, and their families, managing billions in taxpayer funds and negotiating coverage for over 750,000 members. The board sets policy on benefits, premiums, and cost-saving measures.
In his announcement, Briner emphasized the need for practical, patient-centered leadership on the board. He noted that the physician's work in a rural region offers valuable insight into the challenges of delivering affordable care outside major urban centers. The nomination now requires confirmation by the state legislature.
If confirmed, the Greenville doctor will serve a term focused on stabilizing plan finances while maintaining quality coverage. The board has faced pressure in recent years to control rising drug costs and expand wellness programs. Supporters of the nomination say the physician's background could help bridge gaps between medical providers and state administrators.
