Encompass Health stock has more than doubled over the last five years, but the latest analysis suggests the shares are still trading about 16 percent below their fair value. A discounted cash flow model, which projects future cash generation and discounts it back to today's dollars, points to a higher intrinsic worth than the current market price. The stock has returned roughly 105 percent over that stretch, which raises a natural question for investors: how much more room is there to run?
The answer, according to recent checks, is that the market may still be underpricing the company. Encompass Health's cash flow has held up well, and the rehabilitation hospital operator continues to generate steady operating results. That consistency is a key input in the valuation model, and it supports the idea that earnings multiples alone do not capture the full picture. When you look at what the business is likely to produce in free cash flow over the next several years, the current share price leaves room for upside.
Of course, past performance does not guarantee future gains, and a stock that has already doubled can always stall. But the underlying fundamentals here are not showing signs of weakness. The company's focus on post-acute care, particularly inpatient rehabilitation, gives it a defensive quality that tends to hold up even when the broader economy wobbles. With cash flow staying resilient and the balance sheet in decent shape, the valuation gap looks more like an opportunity than a trap.
Investors who have been holding for the long haul might be tempted to take profits after such a strong run. But if the discounted cash flow estimate is even close to accurate, selling now could mean leaving money on the table. The key is whether Encompass Health can keep delivering the kind of operational performance that has driven the stock this far. So far, the numbers suggest it can.
