Augusta University Adds First Undergraduate Public Health Degree

Augusta University will offer its first undergraduate degree in public health after the state Board of Regents approved the program. The new Bachelor of Science in Public Health is designed to prepare students for careers in a field that focuses on preventing disease and improving health across entire communities.

University officials said the degree fills a gap for students who want to work in health without becoming clinicians. Graduates could pursue roles in epidemiology, health education, community outreach, health policy and environmental health. The program also gives students a path to graduate study in public health, medicine, nursing and related areas.

The curriculum will cover core topics such as biostatistics, epidemiology, environmental health and health administration. Students will also complete practical experiences with local health agencies and community organizations, giving them hands-on training before they enter the workforce.

Supporters say the degree comes at a time when demand for public health professionals remains strong. The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted how critical the field is, from tracking outbreaks to running vaccination campaigns and addressing health disparities.

University leaders expect the program to attract students from across Georgia and beyond. Enrollment will begin in the coming academic year, pending final scheduling. Officials said the degree builds on the university's existing health sciences programs and its partnerships with hospitals and public health agencies in the region.
