LANCASTER, Pa. - State Health Secretary Debra Bogen on Friday delivered an urgent message to the public as a measles outbreak in Pennsylvania continues to grow, marking the most significant spread of the virus the state has seen in recent years. "We are not just sitting back and watching this virus spread," Bogen said during a press conference. "We are acting, and we need every parent, every guardian, and every healthcare provider to act with us."
The outbreak, centered in Lancaster County, has now infected more than a dozen people, with health officials warning that the number could rise as contact tracing continues. Most of the cases involve unvaccinated individuals, including children. Bogen stressed that vaccination is the most effective defense, noting that the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine is safe and widely available.
"We have the tools to stop this," she said. "But it requires everyone to do their part." The health department has set up vaccination clinics and is working with schools and community organizations to spread the word. Bogen also urged anyone who suspects they have been exposed to monitor for symptoms, which include fever, cough, runny nose, and a distinctive rash.
The outbreak has prompted concern among public health experts, who point to declining vaccination rates as a key factor. Bogen did not mince words, calling the situation a preventable crisis. "This is not a disease we have to live with," she said. "We have a safe, effective vaccine. The only reason we are here is because too many people have chosen not to use it."
