Amazon is shaking up its healthcare leadership, bringing in Dr. Roy Schoenberg to run its growing health services division. The move was announced by Doug Herrington and Neil Lindsay, two senior executives at the company, who welcomed Schoenberg as the new head of the healthcare business.
Dr. Schoenberg is no stranger to the industry. He previously co-founded AmWell, a major telemedicine platform, and has deep experience in digital health and primary care. His appointment signals that Amazon is serious about expanding beyond just selling pills and bandages. The company has been quietly building out its healthcare footprint, including its acquisition of One Medical and the launch of Amazon Pharmacy.
The leadership change comes at a time when Amazon is trying to figure out how to make healthcare profitable and accessible. The company has faced mixed results in the past, including the shutdown of its hybrid care service, Amazon Care. With Schoenberg at the helm, the focus will likely be on integrating its existing assets, like One Medical clinics and the pharmacy business, into a seamless experience for customers.
Herrington and Lindsay expressed confidence that Schoenberg's background in scaling digital health platforms will help Amazon navigate the complex healthcare landscape. The goal is to offer services that are both convenient and affordable, something that has eluded many tech giants trying to break into the sector.
For now, Amazon is betting that a doctor-led approach will give it an edge. Schoenberg's task is to turn that bet into a real business.
