A 93-year-old woman has died after being found on the ground outside a health care facility in Windsor Locks early Sunday morning. Staff at the Bickford Health Care Center noticed the woman wasn’t in her bed around 4:45 a.m. and began to search for her, according to police.
She was equipped with a device that is supposed to activate if a resident exits the building. Authorities are investigating whether this safety mechanism functioned properly at the time of the incident. The woman was located outside the facility a short time after she was reported missing.
Emergency medical personnel responded and provided immediate aid. The resident was transported to a local hospital, where she was later pronounced dead. The exact cause and circumstances surrounding her death remain under active investigation by the Windsor Locks Police Department.
The tragic event has prompted a review of procedures at the facility. Community members and officials are expressing concern and offering condolences to the woman's family as the investigation continues to determine how this breach in safety occurred.
